Florida based photographer, huge animal lover and advocate for finding every homeless animal a loving home. It’s a passion that drives my photography. Everywhere I go, whether dinner with friends or an epic vacation, I find myself captivated by every furry being I meet. Instead of photographing historic sights or scenery, I always find my camera drawn to the adorable animals that cross my path.

Photographing Anxious, Reactive & Shy Pets | Lessons from Shelter Animals

After photographing thousands of shelter dogs and cats, I’ve learned that beautiful photographs have less to do with perfection and more to do with understanding the pet in front of you.

Your pet doesn’t have to be easy.

One of the reasons I never worry when someone tells me their dog is nervous, reactive, anxious, shy, fearful, or impossible to sit still is because of where I spend so much of my time.

For years, I’ve volunteered as a photographer at the Humane Society, photographing adoptable dogs and cats and helping tell their stories. Every week I meet animals from completely different backgrounds. Some are confident and outgoing. Others are frightened and unsure of everything around them. Some bounce off the walls with excitement. Some cower in their kennels. Many are still learning basic manners, and some are so new to the shelter that they haven’t even learned their names yet. Others are so distracted by the world around them that getting their attention for even a second feels like a small miracle.

And I love them all.

From the ongoing challenges of shelter work to the growth it has inspired in my photography, I’ve learned countless lessons over the years. But perhaps the biggest one is that there is no such thing as a perfect pet.

Every animal comes with a history we may never fully know. Some have experienced tremendous change in a very short period of time. Some are learning how to trust again. Some are simply trying to figure out where they belong. When you spend enough time around rescue animals, you stop expecting them to fit neatly into a box and start appreciating them for who they are.

When I first started volunteering, I approached those photo sessions very differently than I do today. I’d show up with a car full of backdrops, props, lighting equipment, and a very specific vision of the images I wanted to create. In my mind, I already knew exactly how the session was supposed to go.

It didn’t take long for me to realize that the dogs hadn’t read my plan and the cats would make their own entirely.

The longer I volunteered, the more I realized that my best photographs weren’t happening when everything went according to plan. They happened when I stopped trying to force the plan and started paying attention to the animal in front of me.

A nervous dog taught me patience. An overexcited dog taught me flexibility. A shy cat hiding in the back of a kennel taught me that sometimes the fastest way forward is to slow down. Every shelter animal brought something different to the table, and over time those lessons completely changed the way I photograph pets.

After photographing thousands of shelter dogs and cats over the years, I’ve come to appreciate that animals are constantly communicating if we’re willing to pay attention. A flick of the ears, a tucked tail, a shift in posture, a yawn, a glance away, or a sudden interest in sniffing the ground can tell you a lot about how an animal is feeling.

Today, when someone reaches out looking for a photographer for a nervous dog, a reactive dog, a fearful rescue dog, or even a cat that doesn’t particularly enjoy strangers, my first thought isn’t whether that animal can sit, stay, or look at the camera.

My first thought is, “Tell me about your pet.”

Because that’s what really matters.

Once I understand who they are, I know how to build a session around them. Sometimes that means choosing a quieter location. Sometimes it means giving a dog a little extra space. Sometimes it means letting a cat set the pace. Sometimes it means pulling out a favorite toy, a pocket full of treats, or one of the countless little tricks I’ve picked up over the years. And sometimes it means doing less, stepping back, and giving an animal the time they need to settle in.

Some of the dogs and cats I photograph today remind me a lot of animals I’ve met at the shelter. Not because their stories are the same, but because their personalities are. The cautious dog who wants to observe before participating. The rescue dog who keeps checking in with their person for reassurance. The dog who gets excited and forgets all about sitting still. The cat who decides they’d rather watch from a distance before joining the action. Those personalities aren’t obstacles to overcome. They’re part of what makes each animal unique.

Every pet is different, which means every session unfolds a little differently too. That’s one of the things I love most about photographing animals. There is no formula. There is just the animal in front of me and the story they’re willing to share that day.

Some of the most meaningful photographs I’ve ever created came from dogs and cats that weren’t interested in posing or performing. They were simply being themselves. A cautious rescue dog checking in with the person they trust most. A shy cat peeking out from a favorite hiding spot. An energetic dog who thinks every walk is the greatest adventure ever invented.

Those moments tell a story, and stories are what I’m really photographing.

I think that’s why I never worry when someone apologizes for their pet before a session begins. I’ve heard it all. He’s nervous. She’s reactive. He won’t sit still. She’s afraid of strangers.

The funny thing is, those traits rarely prevent beautiful photographs from happening. More often than not, they simply help me understand how to approach the session.

If you’ve been hesitant to reach out because you’re convinced your dog is too nervous, too reactive, too distracted, or simply too much work, I hope this gives you a little reassurance.

After years of photographing shelter animals, I’ve learned that beautiful photographs have very little to do with perfection and a lot to do with understanding the animal in front of you.

So when someone tells me their dog is nervous around strangers, reactive on leash, anxious in new places, or incapable of sitting still for more than a few seconds, I don’t see a problem. I see an individual pet with their own personality, preferences, and way of moving through the world.

The same is true for the shy cat who prefers to observe from a distance before deciding whether I’m worthy of their attention.

Beautiful photographs don’t happen because a pet is perfect.

They happen because someone takes the time to understand who that pet is and works with them instead of against them.

You don’t need an easy pet.

You just need a photographer who knows how to work with the one you have.

Senior Pet Photography in Sarasota | Why you don't want to wait for someday.

A heartfelt story from a Sarasota pet photographer about why waiting too long for a senior dog or cat photography session can become a regret. Honest, emotional, and real moments with the pets we love most.

Don’t Wait for “Someday”

Last October, someone reached out to me about doing a photo session for her senior dog. We had a really nice phone consultation. We talked about her pup, the things she loved about her, and the kinds of images she hoped to have someday. We even tentatively picked a date for the following Friday.

But the session never got booked, and eventually I stopped following up.

A few months later, in early January, I got a text message from a man saying I had previously spoken with his girlfriend and they wanted to move forward with the session. Their dog had started having seizures and they weren’t sure how much longer they had with her.

As a Sarasota pet photographer who photographs a lot of senior dogs, I’ve learned that situations can change much faster than people expect.

I offered them an opening I had the following day. He asked if we could instead do the session the following Thursday, about six days later. Even though I already had plans that evening, I told him yes. Some sessions just feel more important than rearranging a schedule.

After we got off the phone, I was sitting on my couch with my own dogs curled up beside me, watching a movie, completely settled in with no plans for the night. And I kept having this feeling that I shouldn’t wait until the following week.

If truth be told, I wasn’t really in the mood for a session. I normally like having a couple of days to prepare. I like to think through ideas and get inspired beforehand. But something kept telling me to offer that night instead.

So I texted him back and asked if by chance they could come that evening.

He immediately said yes.

Three hours later, they were in my studio.

They brought not only the dog we had planned the session for, but also their second dog and their cat. The session ended up being relaxed, emotional, funny at times, and honestly just really full of love. Before they even left, they told me they already knew they wanted every image without even seeing them.

The next morning, I received a text that their dog had another seizure early that morning and they had to let her go.

I remember just sitting there stunned. Heartbroken for them, of course, but also incredibly grateful we hadn’t waited another six days. Had we waited, they wouldn’t have the amazing memories we created together, and they wouldn’t have the photographs that will keep their girl with them forever.

Why Senior Pet Photography Matters

Two weeks later, I delivered their album, with a stunning family portrait on the cover under crystal glass, meant to be enjoyed as artwork and not hidden away on a phone.

It was one of the most emotional deliveries I’ve ever experienced. They cried, smiled, told stories about her, and held that album like it was part of her. One thing they said has stayed with me ever since:

“To think how close we came to not having this.”

That sentence is exactly why I’m sharing this story.

I think a lot of people assume they have more time. We all do it. We say we’ll book the session when life slows down, when work calms down, when schedules line up better, when the dog loses a little weight, when we lose weight, or when we have extra money.

But our pets don’t live on our timelines.

And one of the hardest parts of loving them is knowing their lives move faster than ours do.

Too often I hear, “I wish I had just done it.”

I recently had another session booked for three dogs. The family booked because one of them had received a prognosis of three to six months, so they thought they still had a little time before scheduling. But he passed away before the session date arrived.

We still did the session with the other two dogs and included cell phone photos of him in the final album.

That’s part of why I feel so strongly about not waiting once the thought crosses your mind. Sometimes we truly do have months or years left. And sometimes things change much faster than anyone expected.

The photographs we keep of them become so much more important after they’re gone. They stop being “something we should do someday” and become part of what helps us hold onto them.

That doesn’t mean every session has to happen during a crisis. Honestly, I hope it doesn’t. The best pet photography sessions are often just ordinary moments with the pets you love most.

But if you’ve been thinking about doing it, especially with a senior dog or senior cat, I hope this story gently reminds you not to wait too long.

Because sometimes six more days turns out to be more time than they have.

For pets who are aging or dealing with health issues, I always keep sessions extra relaxed, flexible, and centered around only what they’re comfortable with. You can read more about my pet photography experience here.

What Pet-Led Photography Really Means — Moments Unleashed by Sherri Krams

Wondering if your dog or cat is “too much” for a photo session? Sherri Krams of Moments Unleashed in Sarasota–Bradenton explains what pet-led photography really means — and why your untrained, excitable, perfectly imperfect pet might just be the best subject of all.

A behind-the-scenes look at how pet-led sessions in Sarasota–Bradenton create natural, personality-filled portraits. No perfect behavior required.

I knew the second we met in that parking lot. This wasn’t going to go the way I’d pictured it.

I had a vision for this session - not a detailed plan, I rarely do, but a play-by-play in my head I wanted to recreate. Two bully dogs at Bay Park in Sarasota. It’s one of my favorite locations. Lush, natural landscaping, open green space, and that beautiful stretch of beach along the water where dogs are welcome. Golden sunset light, dogs splashing and frolicking at the water’s edge, gorgeous natural backdrops, and two big personalities filling every frame.

But when I pulled in, I noticed the bayfront had an event going on. A band, crowds of people, noise everywhere, way more stimulation than a normal visit. And the moment those dogs got out of the car, I could feel the chaos. I watched their parents try to walk them toward me, unsuccessfully, as they had noses down and were pulling in every direction.

When they finally reached me, I was toppled over, not that I minded. But when they showed zero interest in the filet in my pocket, I had my second inkling that the vision in my head might not happen.

On our walk to our first shooting location, it got worse. The dogs were pulling uncontrolably, completely distracted, overstimulated by everything around them. One of them was making herself sick. By the time we reached that first spot, the dad was visibly anxious and I could feel the stress radiating from everyone. He expressed concern about moving forward, especially for her.

That’s when I made a big decision.

I said, “Look — there’s too much noise here, too many distractions, and the dogs are so excited I don’t see them calming down, especially if we head to the beach. I think we should reschedule and try again somewhere quieter — somewhere the dogs don’t have to walk to.”

You could see the relief wash over them instantly. They couldn’t believe I’d made that offer. But the moment they knew we could try again on another date and a better location, everybody just exhaled. We sat on a nearby bench, chitchatting, petting the dogs while the one who’d been making herself sick drank some water and slowly came back down to earth.

And then something shifted.

After a few minutes I noticed one of the dogs had completely settled. So I quietly said, “Just walk him over to that little patch of grass. Sit with him. Love on him. Have some fun.”

No posing. No commands. No expectations. Just connection.

I put on a longer lens, stepped back, and photographed them just being together. And while that was happening, I glanced back at the other dog — and the most beautiful light was falling right on her. I turned the lens and just started shooting.

What I’d already written off as a failed session turned into over 200 images. More than thirty of them were incredible. Every single one delivered in their gallery.

When we met the following week for the redo, the location was quieter. The dogs were still a little crazy, still chaotic, and still completely beautifully themselves. It was the perfect amount of crazy. I didn’t try to pose them. Didn’t ask them to sit and stay. I just let them do their thing and followed along.

We got so many amazing images it took me two days to go through them all.

This is what pet-led photography actually means.

I don’t show up with a shot list and a plan for your pet to perform. I show up ready to follow their lead.

I pay attention to their energy, their comfort level, how they move through the world. Because that’s where the real moments live — the ones that actually look like them.

And here’s something that might surprise you — the dogs who don’t sit still, the ones who are excitable, curious, a little all over the place? They often make for the most incredible sessions.

A highly trained dog can be wonderful — there’s something beautiful about a dog who sits perfectly still where the light and setting is picture perfect. But they also tend to lock in, focused on their person, waiting for direction, holding one expression. You often end up with a lot of the same look.

The dog who’s exploring, reacting, fully alive in the moment? That’s where you get ears up, ears back, mid-leap, pure joy. Variety, movement, and personality in every single frame. That spark you’d recognize anywhere as unmistakably, completely them.

You don’t need a well-behaved pet.

I hear it all the time. “He won’t sit still.” “She’s too excitable.” “I don’t think they’d cooperate.”

And I get why you think that matters. But in a pet-led session, it really doesn’t.

You don’t need your dog to sit and stay. You don’t need your cat to cooperate. You don’t even need to have it all together when you show up. That’s my job — to meet your pet exactly where they are and work with what they give me.

After years of photographing rescue animals, high-energy dogs, and pets of every personality — here in Sarasota, Bradenton, and all across the Gulf Coast — I can tell you this with complete confidence: there is always a way.

You know those moments at home, when your pet does something so them that you reach for your phone? That look. That lean. That expression you never want to forget.

That’s exactly what I’m after — captured with the timing, the light, and the intention to turn it into something lasting. Something you can hold. Something you can hang in your home. Something that keeps them close, even as time moves forward.

Questions I hear all the time

Does my dog need to be trained before a pet photography session?

Not at all. Some of the most beautiful, personality-filled sessions I’ve ever photographed were with dogs who had zero formal training. What matters isn’t obedience — it’s authenticity. I work with your pet exactly as they are.

What if my dog won’t sit still or listen?

Honestly? That’s often an advantage. A dog in motion, fully engaged with the world around them, gives us incredible variety — ears up, ears back, mid-leap, pure joy. The wild ones almost always produce the most dynamic, memorable images.

What if my cat does everything on their own terms?

That’s most cats — and it’s perfectly fine. Cat sessions are entirely cat-led. I follow their pace, work around their comfort, and wait for the moments that are purely them. You’d be surprised what unfolds when there’s no pressure.

What does a pet-led session look like in Sarasota or Bradenton?

Every session is shaped around your pet’s personality and energy level. We choose locations that suit them — whether that’s a quiet park, a shaded trail, a beach at golden hour, or even your boat, kayak, or paddleboard. The goal is always the same: your pet, relaxed and real, in beautiful light.

How is Moments Unleashed different from other pet photographers?

I don’t direct your pet into poses. I observe, I wait, and I create space for the real moments to happen. My approach is rooted in patience, genuine love for animals, and years of experience reading animal behavior. The result isn’t just a pretty photo — it’s a portrait that actually feels like them.

Let’s tell their story.

If you’ve been putting this off because you’re worried your pet isn’t ready — they already are. Exactly as they are.

Reach out to Moments Unleashed and tell me about your pet. We’ll find the right location, the right pace, and create a session that feels easy for both of you.

And in the process, we’ll create something you’ll never want to let go of.

The Quick Trim or the Long Game?

If you’ve ever stood next to your freshly groomed dog thinking, “Yup, this is THE haircut,” you’re not alone. Or maybe you’ve looked over at your shaggy pup mid-zoomie and thought, “This wild mess? This is so them.”

So when it comes to preparing for a professional pet photography session, one of the most common questions I get is: “Do I need to groom my pet before a photoshoot?”

The answer isn’t as simple as “yes” or “no,” and honestly, I love that. Why? Because it opens the door to a much better conversation—what you love most about how your pet looks. Is it their clean, tidy ears? Or the way their fringe falls just over their goofy eyes? Either version can be beautiful, as long as it feels like them.

At Moments Unleashed, I care most about one thing: capturing your companion the way you love them. So let’s talk about how grooming fits into that story.

The Real Question Isn’t “Should You Groom?”

It’s “How Do You Want to Remember Them?”

Many of the pet parents I work with—especially here in the Sarasota–Bradenton area—have never booked a pet photography session before. There’s excitement, of course, but also a quiet wave of nerves. You might be wondering if your dog will sit still, or if your cat will do everything but pose.

But one worry always comes up: “What if they don’t look perfect?”

And my answer is always the same: They don’t need to.

I’ve photographed pets with professionally styled coats—and others still shaking off shelter dust. Polished poodles. Shaggy mutts with fur like clouds. What matters is presence, eyes we can see, expressions we can feel, and moments that show who they truly are.

So grooming before a pet photoshoot only matters as much as it supports visibility and authenticity.

Let’s break that down.

What Really Matters When Grooming for a Pet Photoshoot

1. Plan Around Your Favorite Look

Every pet parent has a sweet spot, the version of their pet that makes them smile the most.

For some, that’s right after grooming when everything is neat and tidy.

For others, it’s a week or two later, when fluff softens and personality shows in every curl.

For pets who don’t visit groomers, a simple brush and face wipe before your photo session is more than enough.

Timing tips:

If you like a fresh groom, aim for the day after your appointment.

If you prefer a little grow-out, book your pet photoshoot one to two weeks later.

Avoid grooming the same day as your session whenever possible.

In short: schedule your session for when you love how your pet looks.

2. Visibility Is Key—Especially the Eyes

When it comes to pet photography, eyes matter. A lot.

For long-haired breeds like Doodles, Shih Tzus, or Lhasas, fur can easily cover the eyes and hide expression. A gentle trim around the face can make a huge difference in your final images.

You don’t need a full haircut, but keeping the face area clear helps your pet’s personality shine.

A few reassurances:

Tear stains can often be softened during editing.

Flyaway hairs and uneven spots are usually easy to retouch.

But eyes completely hidden by fur are much harder to work around, which is why light face grooming is often the most helpful prep step.

3. Skip Same-Day Grooming

If you take one thing from this post, let it be this: don’t groom your pet on the same day as their photoshoot.

Here’s why:

Grooming can be overstimulating or stressful for pets.

Fresh cuts can look stiff and unnatural at first.

Sometimes trims are shorter than expected and need a little time to settle.

Your pet photography session should feel calm and familiar—not rushed. Giving your pet time to relax back into their normal routine makes a noticeable difference in both behavior and expression.

4. No Judgment. Ever.

Some of the most meaningful images I’ve created were with pets who hadn’t been groomed at all.

Shelter dogs with wild tufts, uneven coats, and scruffy ears going in every direction.

And yet—they were unmistakably themselves.

I’ve seen more emotion in an untrimmed tail wag than in any polished pose.

Authenticity will always matter more than perfection.

Why This Matters for the Photos You’ll Treasure Most

When you look back at these photos years from now, I don’t want you thinking about whether the haircut was perfect.

I want you to remember the way they looked at you, the tilt of their head, and all the little details that made them them.

Great pet portraits aren’t about being “camera ready.” They’re about trust, comfort, and presence. If your pet shows up happy and loved, I’ll take care of the rest.

Let’s Capture Them Just As You Know Them

If you’ve been debating whether to groom your pet before a photoshoot, remember this:

your pet doesn’t need to be “ready” for their close-up. They already are.

Every detail we plan, grooming included, is simply there to support one thing: capturing the connection you share.

If you’re planning a pet photography session and have questions about grooming, timing, or whether your pet will cooperate (hint: they will, in their own perfect way), I’m here to help.

Click here to start the conversation, and let’s plan something beautiful.

You and your pet deserve to be seen just as you are: loved, real, and unforgettable.

New Pet Adoption: Timeline & Expectations for Dogs & Cats

Learn what to expect after adopting your dog or cat — from the first days to months settling in, training tips, and how to build confidence and connection.

Congratulations on welcoming a new life into your home.

You may be feeling a lot of excitement and a little uncertainty right now, that’s completely normal. Adoption isn’t a single moment. It’s the beginning of a relationship, and meaningful relationships take time to grow.

What years of rescue work has taught me about adoption.

For over ten years, I’ve been photographing the dogs and cats at the Humane Society at Lakewood Ranch.

I’ve also rescued animals throughout my adult life, and today I share my home with three rescue Chihuahuas and a foster-failure orange tabby cat.

What all of this has taught me is simple and important:

Even the most loving homes need time to feel like home.

Your new dog or cat may not understand yet that they’re home forever.

They may not understand your routine, the rules, or the rhythm of your household.

What they do understand is that everything around them is new.

This adoption adjustment timeline explains what to expect as your new dog or cat settles in. Understanding how long it takes a pet to settle in after adoption helps reduce stress.

Cindy Jackson, Board Member and Adoption Counselor advises to follow the Rule of Three

What to Expect in the First Few Days: Adjustment, Not Attachment

In the early days, many adopted pets are simply taking everything in. You might notice they are:

Quieter than expected, or unusually alert

Hesitant to explore

Extra clingy or more reserved

Unsure about eating, sleeping, or fully relaxing

This isn’t a sign that something is wrong. It’s a sign that your pet is processing a big transition.

From years of working closely with shelter pets — and living this journey myself — this stage is incredibly common and completely normal.

What Happens in the First Few Weeks: Personality Begins to Emerge

As days turn into weeks, you’ll often see small but meaningful changes. Your pet may begin to:

Show more energy or playfulness

Test boundaries

React to new sights and sounds

Reveal quirks and preferences

This phase can feel confusing at times, but it’s actually a positive sign. It means your pet is starting to feel safe enough to show more of who they are. Progress may not feel linear. Some days will feel easy, others less so — and that’s okay.

Where Can Training Fit in? (And Why Timing Matters)

Many new adopters wonder when they should start training. The earliest days aren’t about training — they’re about decompression and routine.

During the first week or two, the most important things you can offer are:

Consistency

Clear expectations

Calm reassurance

This helps your pet feel safe.

Once your pet begins to relax — often a couple of weeks in — gentle, positive training can support the adjustment process. This might look like:

Rewarding calm behavior

Practicing simple cues

Getting comfortable with a leash or carrier

Learning daily routines

Training at this stage isn’t about perfection or obedience. It’s about communication, confidence, and trust. Training isn’t just behavior, it builds communication and confidence, which helps pave the way for deeper trust as the weeks go on.

From everything I’ve seen — both professionally and personally — pets thrive when learning feels encouraging and predictable.

If you need extra support, the Humane Society often works with trainers like Foster Dog Farms when dogs come in with specific training needs. They’re one of several resources adopters in our community are familiar with.

What You Will See After A Few Months: Trust Takes Root

Over the next couple of months, many adopted pets begin to truly settle in. They start to:

Understand your routines

Feel more confident in their environment

Relax more fully

Form deeper bonds

This is often when a pet’s true personality shines — once they feel secure. Some pets need more time, especially those who experienced stress or multiple transitions before finding their home. There’s no set timeline — and no rush.

Do Things Feel Imperfect? You’re Right Where You Should Be

It’s easy to quietly wonder if you’re doing everything “right." Please know this:

Instant, effortless transitions are rare

Bonding grows through consistency, not pressure

Patience is part of love

You don’t need to rush the relationship. You just need to keep showing up.

You’re Doing Better Than You Think

If this season feels emotional, uncertain, or imperfect — that’s okay.

You didn’t just adopt a pet. You began a journey; and that journey deserves patience, grace, and time.

Looking Ahead: Capturing Their Story When the Time Is Right

Once your pet has had time to settle in, when their confidence grows and their personality truly shines , you might want to consider documenting this chapter of your life together.

Consider a professional pet photo session. Professional photography goes beyond cell phone snapshots. It captures:

Expression and connection

Personality and emotion

The bond you’re building together

These are images meant to live in your home — not just on your phone — becoming lasting reminders of this season of your life.

Pet Photography FAQ for Pet Parents | Sarasota–Bradenton

A professional pet photography FAQ for sentimental pet parents in Sarasota–Bradenton. Learn what to expect from a fun, calm, guided session designed to capture your pet’s personality, connection, and presence.

If your dog or cat is family, I know your camera roll is probably overflowing with photos. You already capture the everyday moments — the silly, the quiet, the familiar.

But are those images truly in focus? Is there detail in the eyes and fur? Was the moment frozen at just the right time? These are the subtle differences that separate a cell phone snapshot from a professional pet portrait.

Most sentimental pet parents would love professional photographs of their beloved — images that feel timeless, emotionally rich, and worthy of the place pets hold in their lives.

What often stops pet parents from booking professional pet photography in Sarasota–Bradenton isn’t a lack of love or appreciation.

It’s uncertainty.

Will my dog cooperate? What if my cat hides? What do I need to do?

Below are clear, honest answers to the questions I hear most often — designed to help you feel confident, prepared, and excited about creating meaningful artwork of your pet.

What if my pet doesn’t cooperate during the session?

This is the most common concern — and the easiest to put at ease.

Your pet does not need to be perfectly trained or well-behaved.

I don’t photograph obedience or manners. I photograph personality. Whether your dog is energetic, shy, stubborn, senior, or somewhere in between, I adapt the session to them — not the other way around.

Movement, curiosity, and quiet moments often create the most expressive, emotionally resonant portraits.

Do pets need training for a succesful photo session?

No formal training is required.

If your dog knows basic commands, that can help briefly — but it’s not essential. Comfort, trust, and gentle guidance matter far more.

I read body language, energy shifts, and attention cues to help pets relax and show their true personality naturally.

Where do pet photography sessions take place?

Pet photography sessions in Sarasota and Bradenton take place in my home studio or at one of my intentionally chosen outdoor locations.

I select locations for their soft, flattering light, natural tones, layered textures, and visual depth — elements that elevate the image without overpowering your pet.

The environment supports relaxed movement and genuine expression, creating portraits that feel organic rather than staged.

Do dogs need to be off leash during the session?

No. For outdoor pet photography sessions, dogs are almost always photographed on leash for safety.

I use simple, non-distracting leashes and position the hadler intentionally so your dog can move naturally while remaining secure. I carefully remove the leash during post-processing, so the final images feel clean, natural, and uninterrupted.

Your dog’s safety and comfort always come first — and you never have to worry about control or perfection during the session

How long does a pet photography session last?

Most pet photography sessions last 60–90 minutes.

This allows time for your pet to settle in, explore the space, take breaks, and relax into the experience. I never rush sessions — calm pets create the most authentic images. They will always lead the way and set the pace.

What should I bring to a pet photo session?

I bring lots of treats and toys to help your pet feel comfortable and motivated: but it is always good to bring your pet's favortites as well.

High-value treats

Favorite toys or squeakers

A simple leash and collar

Water and a bowl

A brush or towel for quick touch-ups

I’ll guide everything else.

Why choose professional pet photography instead of phone photos?

Thanksgiving Gratitude: The Little Ways Pets Show Thanks

As Thanksgiving approaches, many of us start thinking about what we’re grateful for, the big, meaningful parts of life.

But if you’ve ever watched a dog greet the morning with a full-body stretch or a cat settle into the warmest sunbeam, you already know something important: our pets never wait for a holiday to feel grateful. They find it in the smallest moments, every single day.

In my years photographing family pets and volunteering with shelter animals, I’ve learned that gratitude isn’t something they wait for — it’s something they express in countless quiet ways each day.

And whether I’m photographing pets here in Sarasota and Bradenton, loving on my own three Chihuahuas and my orange tabby who thinks he’s part of the dog pack, or working with shelter animals discovering safety for the first time — I see the same truth again and again: pets are profoundly appreciative beings.

Offer them warmth, kindness, or a moment of presence, and they respond in ways you can feel — a softening, a lean, a steady trust that says thank you without a sound.

The Everyday Moments We Should Never Take for Granted

One of the clearest ways pets teach us gratitude is through the tiny moments we so easily overlook.

Life gets full this time of year. It’s easy to rush past the little things our pets never miss:

The little moment when they curl in close, choosing you as their safe place

Eyes that meet yours with that “you’re my whole world” softness

A loyal shadow following you from room to room

The sudden zoomies that send you into laughter

The burst of joy when you return — even if you were only gone twenty minutes

Individually, these moments seem small. Together, they’re the quiet heartbeat of our days, and they’re worth being thankful for.

Pets Have a Way of Bringing Calm Back Into Our Day

While we juggle plans, cooking, cleaning, and the steady pace of the holidays, our pets draw us back to what matters:

The soft tap of a paw reminding you that you’re not alone in the chaos

The way they drop a toy at your feet — a tiny invitation to pause

The deep, knowing sigh as they tuck themselves close, grounding you without trying

They always seem to sense when we’re not at our best , staying close, offering comfort, and quietly putting our needs before their own.

These are the moments where their gratitude shows; and how lucky we are that they communicate it so clearly, in their own quiet way.

Behind the camera, I’m reminded of it all the time — that look a dog gives their person, the kind that feels like pure gratitude, or the way a nervous shelter pet finally softens when it sees the volunteer who’s been quietly showing up for them. These small, almost invisible moments of trust and thankfulness are the ones my camera loves to capture and the ones that stay with me the longest.

A small reminder this Thanksgiving

Somewhere between the food, the conversations, and the beautiful chaos of the holiday, I hope you find one small moment with your pet that makes you pause: a glance, a lean, a warm presence by your side.

These tiny moments, the ones our pets treasure, often become the ones we end up most grateful for.

With gratitude

Thank you for being part of this community of pet lovers here in Sarasota and Bradenton.

I’m grateful for your pets, your trust, and the joy you bring into their lives simply by loving them so deeply.

Wishing you and your four-legged family a warm, peaceful, tail-wagging Thanksgiving.

When patience, timing, and a little magic come together.

Photographing dogs? Easy and fun! They show up wagging, ready to please, eyes sparkling like they already know they’re the star.

Cats? An entirely different story. They prefer to observe, quietly deciding whether or not you—and your camera—deserve their attention. They might even decide they don’t want to show up at all.

I’ve photographed plenty of dogs together—duos, trios, even quadruples—and literally hundreds of solo cats, from the shy and hiding to the confident and cooperative. But this was my first time photographing two dogs and a cat together. Honestly? I wasn’t convinced it could happen.

I went in hopeful for some beautiful individual shots with the possibility of photoshopping them together, and maybe—if the stars aligned—a candid of all three in the same frame.

Meet Peep, Rudy & Izzy

Peep, a gorgeous white Persian, arrived like he owned the place. He didn’t hide or take time to acclimate—he hopped right onto the stage, posed beautifully, and gave me several stunning portraits… until he decided he was done. I figured that was it—his royal highness had retired for the day.

Rudy and Izzy, his Schnauzer siblings, were typical dogs in the best possible way. After a few sniffs and snuggles, they were eager, attentive, and full of heart. They gave me those soulful looks that melt you right into a puddle and happily sat together for some beautiful brother–sister portraits.

By that point, I already had everything I needed—individuals and combinations that could easily be composited together later. But part of me thought, maybe, just maybe, we could get the real thing. Because no amount of Photoshop can replace the magic of a genuine moment.

The Chaos Made It All Worth It

Peep wanted nothing to do with the stage, hopping down every time we placed him back on it. Not even the fail-proof Churu treat could convince him to stay. My bag of tricks was nearly empty—until I tried one last thing: a small, lightweight leash. He wasn’t thrilled at first, but after a moment, he decided to relax.

Mom held his leash (which I later edited out), I lifted Rudy and Izzy back up, Dad waved a crinkly toy behind me, and I made every ridiculous sound I know—and then, just for a heartbeat, all three looked straight into my lens.

CLICK - GOT IT!

One of my favorite images captured everything I love about doing this work.

And as a bonus, we even managed a family portrait with Mom and Dad, all five of them looking at the camera at once. Talk about miracles!

But I didn’t just get it once. We captured that same magic twice—once in the studio, and again outdoors a week later at Bay Park in Sarasota.

It takes time. It takes patience. It takes an innate understanding of animals—and knowing exactly what you can (and can’t) ask of them.

Why These Sessions Matter

During their image reveal, their mom said something that truly resonated with me:

“I had this image in my mind. I kept trying with my phone and it never worked. I knew I needed a pro, but I kept putting it off because I was afraid it wouldn’t work. But as they’ve gotten older, I realized I had to try—because time would pass and I’d lose the chance.”

That’s what these portraits are really about.

Not just capturing perfection — and the moments that aren’t. The connection, the laughter, the tiny flashes of chaos and the hearts that make every family unique.

Thanks to these portraits, Rudy, Izzy, and Peep’s story — and the love their family shares — will live on every time they walk past that framed portrait on the wall or flip through the pages of their luxury photo album.

Because in the end, it’s not just about having beautiful photos. It’s about holding on to the moments you never want to forget. It’s about keeping them with you — forever

Ready to Create Your Own Timeless Portraits?

Whether it’s a curious cat, a pack of pups, or your whole furry family, I’d love to tell your story—with patience, understanding, and maybe a few squeaky-toy sound effects along the way.

If you’ve been following along in this series, we’ve already explored some of my favorite trails, parks, and beaches to enjoy with your dog. But our pups aren’t just our hiking buddies—they’re also our brunch dates, market companions, and happy-hour sidekicks.

Welcome to Part Two of my three-part guide to the most dog-friendly places around Sarasota and Bradenton!

If you read Part One, you already know some of my favorite places to explore on leash. But sometimes, your dog just needs to run. Full-speed, ears-flapping, tongue-lolling kind of running. And for that, nothing beats a great off-leash park or a splash in the surf.

As a local pet photographer (and dog mom to three very opinionated pups), I spend a lot of time exploring dog-friendly places—not just for play, but to scout the best photo session spots too. These are some of the most tail-wagging, freedom-filled locations for off-leash adventures in our area.

Lakewood Ranch Dog Park (Greenbrook Adventure Park) – Lakewood Ranch

This beautiful park offers separate areas for large and small dogs, shaded benches, water stations, and wide-open space—perfect for play and pet portraits alike.

Photography tip: Golden hour light here is ideal for vibrant, action-filled dog photography.

Happy Tails Dog Park at G.T. Bray – Bradenton

This well-kept park offers three separate play areas that rotate use, helping preserve the grass. There’s a rinse station, agility equipment, and plenty of seating. Locals love how friendly and social the vibe is—great if your dog thrives on making new friends.

17th Street Paw Park – Sarasota

Not my persoanl favorite, but it is a Sarasota classic and you'll always find other dogs for play dates. This spacious park has separate big and small dog areas, ample shade, and even a doggie drinking fountain. It’s close to downtown but feels worlds away.

Creekwood Canine Park – Bradenton (off SR 70 near interstate)

My dogs love this spot—it’s convenient, peaceful, and surprisingly spacious. There are two large fenced areas for big and small dogs to play safely, along with covered picnic tables, shade trees, and easy walking paths that loop around the dog area for a relaxing leashed stroll before or after playtime.

It’s centrally located near shops and dining, with plenty of parking, making it a great go-to whether you’re planning a dedicated outing or just squeezing in a quick romp while running errands.

Located inside Arlington Park, this fenced-in dog area used to be a baseball field, so it’s roomy and flat. It offers double-gated entrances, water stations, and sections for large and small dogs. It’s mostly sunny but surrounded by walkable shaded paths in the larger park.

Gillespie Park Canine Club – Sarasota (Rosemary District)

Nestled in one of Sarasota’s oldest parks, Gillespie’s off-leash Canine Club is a community favorite. It has separate areas for large and small dogs, seating, water fountains, and a pretty pond nearby. It’s walkable from downtown—perfect for dogs and humans who love a little city energy.

Photography tip: With its city-meets-nature vibe and charming landscape, Gillespie is ideal for capturing personality-filled portraits with a touch of urban charm.

Photography tip: The tree lined paths around the park create great natural framing and backdrop for stunning portraits as well as iin-action shots

Laurie Crawford Dog Park – Palmetto (Blackstone Park)

Tucked into the northeast corner of G.T. Bray Park, this off-leash dog area is a hidden gem with a laid-back, local vibe. There are two fenced sections for large and small dogs, plus covered picnic tables, benches, and shaded spots to cool off. Water fountains, waste stations, and easy parking make it super convenient—whether you’re planning a playdate or just stopping by before heading to nearby shops and restaurants.

Surrounding walking paths offer a nice leashed stroll, It may not be fancy, but it has heart—and friendly regulars who make it feel like part of the community.

Coming Soon: The Dog Bar Sarasota – Opening Mid July

Exciting news—The Dog Bar Sarasota is opening mid July in the former Boo’s Ice House & Dog Bar location, a space that was already a beloved hangout for local dog lovers. Now, it’s getting a fresh start under new ownership by the team behind the original Dog Bar in St. Pete.

This spot offers a large air-conditioned indoor off-leash play area, a spacious outdoor yard, and a full restaurant and bar—making it the perfect place to relax while your dog plays freely. Think social hub, dog park, and neighborhood hangout all rolled into one.

They’re planning a full calendar of events, breed meet-ups, and community gatherings, so keep an eye out—this is sure to become one of Sarasota’s top dog-friendly destinations.

I’m looking forward to seeing it come to life again— capturing some of the joy and chaos that comes with dogs at play here always made my heart and camera happy.

Brohard Paw Park – Venice

The only official dog beach in Sarasota County, with Gulf views, fenced beach access, and rinse stations.

Pet photography tip: Splash shots + sunset = unbeatable.

Fort De Soto Park – Tierra Verde

A little farther, but absolutely worth it. Fort De Soto’s dog beach is stunning, with soft white sand and shallow waters perfect for swimming. The adjacent fenced dog park has shaded areas and rinse stations.

Pet photography tip: Lush natural lanscaoe plus beach offers lots of variety ifor custom sessions.

Palma Sola Causeway – Bradenton

Not technically a dog beach—but your pup won’t know the difference. This popular stretch along Manatee Avenue welcomes dogs to splash, swim, and dig in the sand right off the bay. There’s no fence, so it’s not officially off-leash, but you’ll often see dogs running free under watchful eyes.

Be mindful of traffic and other beachgoers, especially on weekends when it gets busy. Early mornings and weekdays are best for a calmer, more relaxed vibe.

Photography tip: Sunrise or overcast days create gorgeous, even light. Wet noses and sandy paws? Perfection.

Emerson Point Preserve – Palmetto

Tucked away at the tip of Snead Island, Emerson Point Preserve offers a beautiful mix of shaded trails, mangrove boardwalks, and a peaceful slice of shoreline where dogs can splash and swim. At the very end of the preserve, there’s a small beachy area where dogs are often seen off leash, romping in the water and living their best salty life.

It’s not a formal dog beach—but it’s quiet, scenic, and one of the area’s hidden gems. A perfect spot if your pup loves a little adventure and you want to avoid the crowds.

Final Thoughts

Off-leash adventures are where dogs shine brightest—and where some of the best moments are made. These Sarasota-Bradenton dog parks and beaches are more than places to play; they’re backdrops for stories, friendships, and beautiful portraits.

If you’re dreaming of dog photos that capture your pup’s true spirit—muddy paws, windswept fur, joyful leaps—I’d love to help you bring that vision to life.

As a pet photographer who’s spent over a decade photographing dogs in Sarasota and Bradenton, one of the things I get asked most often is:

“What are some fun things I can do with my dog around here?”

So I decided to put together a guide—a three-part blog series featuring my favorite dog-friendly places to walk, explore, relax, and reconnect. Between my own three dogs and the many pups I meet through my camera lens, I’ve spent years discovering the best local spots—some well-known, others quietly tucked away. But all of them are places I return to—for the fun, the connection, and the kind of everyday magic that’s worth remembering—especially when I have my camera in hand.

Whether you’re planning a peaceful outing, looking for fresh air and tail wags, or simply want a change of scenery, this series was made for you.

This is Part 1, focused on the best leashed walks and nature trails around Sarasota and Bradenton.

Part 2 will cover off-leash dog parks and dog-friendly beaches.

And in Part 3, I’ll share my go-to dog-friendly restaurants, markets, and social spots where pups are always welcome.

Stick around to the end of this post for a few simple tips on how to photograph your dog—even with just your phone.

Dog-Friendly Walks in Sarasota

Note: All these places require your dog to be on leash.

Sarasota Bayfront Park

A breezy waterfront favorite with palm trees, wide paths, and marina views. There’s plenty of space to explore—and you can grab a bite or cocktail at O’Leary’s while your pup relaxes at your feet. A great spot for people watching as well as the sunset.

The Bay Park

One of my personal favorites! This peaceful park offers shaded paths, open lawns, and even a small beach area where leashed dogs can wade. It’s one of the most photogenic parks in town, with a variety of backdrops in one walkable location—especially at sunset.

Nathan Benderson Park

This lakeside trail is perfect for calm morning walks or light jogs. The wide paved paths are great for strollers or older dogs, and the clean, open space looks beautiful at sunrise and golden hour. There’s also a playground and picnic tables for the whole family.

Conservatory Park

Tucked off University Parkway, this quiet neighborhood park features a one-mile loop surrounded by trees and a lake. It’s rarely crowded and ideal for peaceful, shaded leashed walks.

Circus Hammock

A hidden gem (especially in the dry season) right next to 17th Street Dog Park. This 22-acre preserve offers shady, unpaved trails that feel like a secret forest in the middle of the city. Bring water—and maybe your camera—because it’s a lovely, low-traffic spot.

Myakka River State Park

One of Florida’s oldest and most iconic state parks. With miles of trails, prairie views, and boardwalks over wetlands, it’s a dream for both hiking and photography. Different seasons offer wildflowers, wildlife, and beautiful variety.

Note: Dogs aren’t allowed on the Canopy Walkway, but there’s so much else to explore.

Bradenton, Palmetto & Lakewood Ranch Trails

Robinson Preserve

A nature lover’s favorite. With boardwalks, mangrove tunnels, and a scenic observation tower overlooking the Skyway Bridge, this preserve is ideal for long, leashed walks surrounded by native Florida beauty.

Emerson Point Preserve

One of my personal go-tos—for both walks and photography sessions. This preserve offers multiple shady trails, open water views, forested areas, and even a small beach area that’s dog-friendly. It’s peaceful, a little wild, and full of natural charm. It’s worth the drive—and my preferred spot for signature sessions.

Bradenton Riverwalk

A scenic urban path along the Manatee River with plenty of space to stroll, relax, or enjoy the art, splash pad, or skate park atmosphere. There are often events and music happening, making it a fun option if your dog loves variety and you enjoy a city-meets-nature vibe.

Neal Preserve

Just before the Anna Maria Island bridge, this 120-acre preserve features shell trails, raised boardwalks, and a 20-foot observation tower. It’s usually quiet—perfect for a peaceful outing and a few stunning photo ops.

Heron’s Park Nature Retreat (Lakewood Ranch)

This 110-acre nature retreat is one of my new favorite discoveries. You’ll need to walk a bit to reach the best spots, but once you do, it’s absolutely worth it. The trails—both marked and unpaved—meander through peaceful woodlands and around two sparkling lakes: 12-acre Heron Lake and 27-acre Summerfield Lake.

There’s space for fishing and boating, but what I love most is the feeling of calm and connection that sets in the further you go. Bird-watchers will especially appreciate the habitat here, and for me, it has the quiet charm of a lakefront retreat. It’s perfect for thoughtful walks, nose-to-the-ground exploration, and the kind of photo sessions that feel like a true getaway—without leaving town.

Jiggs Landing Outpost (Bradenton)

Tucked along the Braden River, Jiggs Landing is a quiet spot full of Old Florida charm. Once a historic fishing camp, it now offers peaceful, leashed walks on wooden boardwalks, docks, and grassy areas by the water. You might spot birds, turtles… and yes, the occasional gator (so keep those pups leashed!).

There’s a snack bar, cabin rentals, and even live music a few evenings a week, which gives the place a relaxed, community feel. It’s a client favorite for casual, earthy photo sessions—and one of those under-the-radar spots where time slows down and new smells await around every turn.

Tips for Your Trail Day

Leashes are required at all parks unless otherwise posted

Bring waste bags, water, and a towel (especially after rain)

Early morning or late afternoon = cooler temps and better light

Many of these places are stunning for casual photos—snap away, or bring me along if you’d like something extra special

Avoid direct, midday sun. Dogs squint and harsh shadows take over—look for soft, open shade.

Watch your background. If your dog is in shade and the background is bright, your eye goes straight to the light (not your dog). Keep it even and simple.

Use Burst Mode. You’ll increase your chances of capturing a clean, sharp image—especially with a wiggly pup.

Why do your dog’s photos come out blurry? Cell phone cameras still struggle with fast-moving subjects. They’re amazing, but they’re not magic. For anything action-based, timing and lighting are everything.

Like Portrait Mode? You can create a similar effect by placing your pup far away from the background—this adds soft blur behind them and makes your dog stand out.

Get down to their level. Some of the most expressive, emotional photos happen when you’re eye to eye. I often shoot lying flat on my belly—yes, really!

Mass-Produced Art vs Custom Pet Portraits? Why Custom Wins!

Discover the value of custom pet portraits and why investing in personalized artwork is more meaningful than mass-produced decor. Learn how custom pet art can reflect your beloved pet's spirit and bring lasting comfort and beauty into your home.

The other night, while flipping through a Pottery Barn catalog, a thought hit me.

Why is it that someone will walk into a home décor store and spend $800—or even $1,000+—on a mass-produced canvas of a flower or abstract design… but hesitate when it comes to investing in a custom portrait of their beloved pet?

That flower doesn’t know you; it’s not the face that greets you at the door, tail wagging, eyes sparkling. It’s not the source of comfort on your hardest days or the reason your phone is full of photos.

Yet somehow, mass-produced art is seen as more “worthy” of wall space—and budget.

This isn’t about judgment. It’s about perspective.

Let’s talk about what it really means to invest in art that reflects your heart, your story, and the soul of your best friend.

From the moment we start taking about your pet’s session, I’m thinking about the finished piece.

The colors, textures, lighting—every choice is intentional. I photograph with your space in mind, so the final artwork doesn’t just showcase your pet—it belongs in your home. Whether your vibe is coastal, modern farmhouse, or clean and minimalist, your pet’s artwork can be custom designed to complement your style and feel like it’s always been there.

Before the digital age, people hired professional photographers with one clear goal: to create tangible keepsakes. Albums lived on coffee tables. Portraits hung proudly in entryways and family rooms.

You didn’t just “get the digitals”—because there weren’t any. The value was in the piece you could hold, frame, and pass down.

It wasn’t about the file. It was about the feeling.

A custom pet portrait is more than an image—it’s a reflection of a relationship. It’s hand-crafted, emotionally driven, and designed to last a lifetime. And not just the artwork—but the memories behind it, too.

Because long after the leash is tucked away and the bowls are empty, this is the kind of art that will still bring you comfort. It’ll still make you smile. It will still matter.

When you choose to work with me, you’re not just getting a photo—you’re getting heirloom artwork created with intention. Many of the pieces I offer are handcrafted, one-of-a-kind, and available only through me. I work with skilled artisans who use century-old reclaimed wood, archival papers, and museum-quality finishes. These aren’t products—they’re pieces of art, made to hold the love you’ve poured into your pet for years.

So maybe the question isn’t: “Why does custom pet photography cost more than I expected?”

Maybe the question is: “What’s it worth to have your best friend’s spirit captured in a way that feels just as permanent as the love you shared?”

Because that’s the kind of art that stays. That’s the kind of art that never goes out of style.

Ready to create something that truly lasts?

If you’re a sentimental pet parent in the Sarasota–Bradenton area, who wants more than snapshots, I’d love to talk with you.

Bessie’s Big Moment: A Shelter Dog’s Journey to the Spotlight

Every two months, when it’s time to plan my pet photography session for the cover of Suncoast Pet Magazine, my mind overflows with ideas. For the February issue, with its Valentine’s Day theme, the publisher had a heartfelt request—she wanted to feature a shelter dog in need of a loving home. And she knew just the one.

She wanted Bessie, a 50+ lb terrier mix who has been a resident at the Humane Society at Lakewood Ranch for over three and a half years.

Through my volunteer work photographing shelter animals, I’ve known Bessie since she arrived in 2021. In that time, I’ve witnessed her incredible transformation. She came in as a skeptical, timid pup, unsure of the world around her. But with love, patience, and training, she has blossomed into a well-mannered young lady who listens beautifully, walks great on a leash, and responds wonderfully to commands.

Bessie is playful, affectionate, and full of love—everything a family could ever want in a dog. And I knew she would be perfect for the cover.

I’ve photographed her numerous times over the years. Not only is she stunningly photogenic, but she listens and responds well to all my pet photographer tricks and schticks. My mind had already envisioned the perfect way to showcase Bessie’s big heart and gentle spirit—but I needed help.

I knew they could help.

Every single weekend, they take Bessie out of the shelter for special adventures at local parks and recreational areas. She soaks in the sights, wags her tail at new friends, and embraces every outing with boundless enthusiasm—especially her visits to Starbucks for pup cups.

They also bring Bessie to their home, where she gets to relax on their screened-in lanai, dip her toes in the pool, and enjoy a taste of home life. On their walks, they introduce her to children in their neighborhood, where she is showered with hugs, kisses, and socialization.

Bringing Bessie’s Story to Life

Bessie LOVES kids. So, I knew I wanted to showcase her gentle, affectionate side by capturing her playing with a child. That’s where Mary Anne and Joe really came into play.

Their granddaughter, Addison, recently moved to Lakewood Ranch, and from the very first meeting, she and Bessie were inseparable. I had seen the heartwarming photos in the volunteer Facebook group, and I knew Addison would be the perfect little friend to help tell Bessie’s story.

It's funny how life can take unexpected turns. Until two and a half years ago, I was someone who rarely crossed paths with cats. My mother, having been attacked by one as a young child, had a morbid fear of cats, which cast a shadow of negativity in my mind about these creatures. When I volunteered at the shelter to photograph the adoptable animals, I relished my time with the pups, finding joy in their wagging tails and playful barks. I proudly showcased my canine pet portraits and felt pride whenever I heard that one had been adopted because of my photos. Unfortunately, this never happened with the cats. Whenever I was told, “We have cats that need photos,” I tentatively brought my gear into their area, only to be constantly frustrated by their lack of cooperation and food motivation. Dogs are eager for affection and anxious to please, while the cats seemed aloof and fearful of me—something I struggled to understand—and my feline images always reflected this disconnect.

But everything changed the day I decided to foster a five-week-old kitten with a broken leg. The shelter was short on fosters, and I wanted to help. Little did I know that my heart was destined to be captured by a different kind of companion—one that purrs instead of barks, transforming my “pet” photography in the process.

The moment I picked up this kitten and he let me rub his belly, my heart melted. I had no intentions of keeping him; I didn’t want to deal with kitty litter. I had heard about their difficulty in training and the destruction they could cause to furniture from scratching. Yet something about this little orange kitty—a snuggle bug who purred consistently—melted my heart. When he started “posing” and looking directly into my lens whenever I held up a camera, it became increasingly difficult to consider letting someone else be his mom. To avoid getting too “attached,” I refrained from naming him, but “Kitty Cat” sparked a new passion and challenge in my photography. I spent hours with my camera in hand, eager to capture all his spontaneous escapades, playfulness, and the every nuance of his personality. The more I photographed “Kitty Cat,” the more I realized how expressive and unique feline portraits could be, allowing me to elevate my pet photography to a higher level I never thought possible.

That was two years ago, and Kitty Cat is now Wilson, a cherished member of my fur family. Fully grown and more cat-like than he was as a kitten, he no longer loves to “pose” for my camera (I think I wore him out), but it is because of Wilson that I can now honestly call myself a true pet photographer. Most pet photographers primarily focus on dogs and shy away from cats. I confidently photograph both, offering pet parents an unparalleled photography experience, creating cherished heirlooms that offer a sense of permanence, authenticity, and tangible reminders of the pets that have captured your heart.

These days, when I’m volunteering at the shelter photographing the adoptables, I look forward to visiting the cats. Somehow, they know that I am now a cat person. They are as comfortable in my presence as I am in theirs. They no longer run from me; instead, they curl up in my lap, nuzzle against me, and purr contentedly, as if they know there’s a chance I might take them home (though I remind myself: no, I cannot have another pet).

I could spend hours in the cat room. I love their unique personalities—each one a character in its own right, full of quirks, playfulness, and grace. All their antics, charm, and sometimes even regal stances make for stunning and captivating pet portraits that I am proud to display.

As I reflect on this transformation, I am incredibly grateful for the unexpected twist that led me to embrace these wonderful creatures. Who would have thought that a dog fanatic like me would come to prefer the company of cats? Wilson and the shelter cats have not only enriched my life but have also elevated my pet photography and changed my perspective on what it means to love and care for an animal.

If there's one thing I’ve learned, it’s that sometimes the best experiences come from stepping outside our comfort zones.

So here’s to the cat that has brought laughter, love, and a little bit of chaos into my life. My journey from a cat-averse person to a proud foster failure has been nothing short of extraordinary, and I look forward to all the adventures and one-of-a-kind cat portraits that are yet to come.
